Problem: while a preview played, the RAM preview cache evicted the least
recently used frame. The frames just ahead of the playhead had been rendered
(prefetched) before the frames just shown, so once the cache was full they
were evicted first; prefetch asked for them again, but its queue ran in
request order, so they waited behind every frame further ahead. Playback
ran into a gap right ahead of the playhead while frames far ahead stayed
green, re-rendered the same frames over and over (about four renders per
frame shown when the preview was longer than the cache) and stalled for
seconds. The prefetch window could also reach further ahead than the cache
holds.
Fix: the playing preview tells Frames where it is (Frames::set_playhead).
Evictions then take frames the preview does not reach first (other series,
behind it without looping), least recently used first, then the frame it
reaches last; prefetch renders the frame it reaches first; queued prefetch
frames it no longer reaches are dropped (and leave the in-flight set). The
prefetch window stops at what the cache holds. The viewer puts a CPU frame
that needs no averaging on screen without copying its pixels.

Problem: scrubbing a long movie showed the frame under the pointer
seconds after the pointer stopped. Every viewer frame a free frame-pool
thread had started kept running: each seeked the movie's one decoder and
decoded up to a GOP, and the newest frame waited behind all of them on
the decoder's lock (45 min 1080p H.264/HEVC, GOP 250: 1.8-3.6 s for the
last frame of a drag; a single jump is 0.1-0.4 s). FilmCraft's decoder
already polls a cancellation flag, but nothing set one.
Fix: FootageSource::cancellable / called_off and CancellableFootage (a
per-render view whose frame reads run under the render's own flag, so
reads on other threads answer to the right render). MediaPool runs them
under filmcraft_media::cancel::with_cancel. The frame workers render
through it, and a newer viewer frame calls off the comp's running viewer
frames of other times. A called-off render is not cached (frames, disk,
layer cache). Drag latency is now 0.1-0.3 s.

Every viewer request spawns a job on the frame pool. A pool thread blocked
inside a render (waiting on a parallel loop's join) runs other pool work
meanwhile, rayon's injected jobs included: the spawn of the next request
started a whole frame render on top of the waiting one. Dragging makes a
new revision, and a new viewer frame, every UI frame, so renders nested
without bound on every thread, each holding its buffers (a large image's
full-resolution copies), until all memory was used. Holding the layer still
makes no new revisions, which is why only moving it did this.
A spawn now drains the queue, and one that lands inside a render on its
thread returns at once; the render below takes the queued jobs when it is
done. Each pool thread renders one frame at a time.

The cache bars count the frames of `shown_series`, which rebuilds the
series from the frame key's scale in thousandths (333 -> 0.333). The key's
`opts` hashed the render options with the f64 scale, and the frames had been
rendered at 0.3333..., so the series never matched and the bars stayed empty
at Third (and any resolution that isn't a whole number of thousandths, such
as Custom 1/7).
`opts_hash` now hashes the scale rounded to the key's thousandths, which the
key carries anyway.

Image sequences are watched only with All Footage (the default,
Non-Sequence Footage, leaves them alone). Purge also forgets the viewer's
per-revision disk keys, which hash footage files' size and time, so a
file reloaded without a new revision is keyed again.

Cause: Auto dropped to Half below 75 % magnification, so text between
50 % and 75 % was rendered with fewer pixels than the screen shows and
looked soft. Below 100 % the frame texture was minified with a plain
bilinear sampler and no mip levels (Full at 46 % skipped most frame
pixels), so edges stair-stepped.
Fix:
- Auto renders the pixels the magnification needs, as in After Effects:
the coarsest whole factor that still gives every screen pixel a
rendered one (Full above 50 %, Half down to 33.3 %, Third down to
25 %, Quarter below).
- GPU frames: the display texture carries a full mip chain, each level
the 2 x 2 mean of the one above (display.wgsl `mip`, same bind group
layout as `display`), sampled trilinearly with Viewer Zoom Quality
More Accurate (Faster keeps the nearest pixel of the full-size frame).
- CPU frames (egui-wgpu textures have no mips): uploaded averaged down
by the whole factor that leaves about one texel per screen pixel, the
same box average as the texture-limit fit (#201), re-uploaded when the
magnification calls for another factor; drawn with texture coordinates
that keep each texel over its pixels when the size isn't a multiple.
Show Channel / exposure textures follow.
Tests: gpu tests::display_frames_are_mipmapped (level count and level 1
= 2 x 2 means of level 0), viewer_tools

Scrubbing asks for the viewer frame under the pointer at every step.
Each newer request only demoted the earlier ones to prefetch, so every
frame the pointer passed was still rendered, oldest first, holding the
frame threads the frame under the pointer needed. A newer viewer frame
of a comp now drops that comp's viewer frames that haven't started
(and releases them, so they can be asked for again). Frames already
rendering finish into the cache (rendering can't be interrupted
mid-frame), and the viewer keeps its last frame until the new one is
in. Prefetch frames and other comps' viewer frames stay queued.
Test: a_newer_viewer_frame_drops_the_ones_still_waiting (frames).

An 11000 x 2200 comp at Full resolution renders on the CPU, and the
frame went to egui as one texture over the device's 8192 px limit:
the upload failed every frame (a panic in debug builds) and the window
stopped drawing. Creating a comp that size at Full did the same.
Frames, snapshots, the channel / exposure view, other viewers, the
Layer and Footage panels and the Roto Brush overlay now go up averaged
down by the smallest whole factor that fits. The full frame stays
readable for pixel readouts.
Tests: frames_over_the_texture_limit_are_averaged_down and
full_resolution_frames_wider_than_the_texture_limit_fit (panicked

The desktop app shares egui-wgpu's device, which had no uncaptured-error
handler, so wgpu's default one panicked on an out-of-memory error on
every frame thread; the panicking frame stayed "in progress" forever and
never rendered again. The GPU frame budget was a fixed 1 GiB.
- GpuContext::new logs uncaptured errors once its pipelines are built
(errors while building them still panic there, which the app catches
to fall back to CPU compositing).
- Gpu::within_memory runs GPU work in an out-of-memory error scope; on an
error the result is discarded and uploaded layers and pooled textures
are freed.
- Frame workers render each frame within it; out of memory, the frame
renders on the CPU and the RAM preview keeps half as many GPU frames
(down to 64 MiB), since wgpu can't tell how much video memory there is.
- A frame whose render panics renders again on the CPU, or is released,
so the viewer asks for it again.
Tests: a_frame_whose_render_panics_is_released (failed before),
running_out_of_video_memory_halves_the_gpu_frame_budget and

Toggling a layer's Audio, Lock or Shy switch (or Hide Shy Layers) threw
away every cached frame: the RAM preview identity hashes each comp's
address, which any edit replaces, and the layer and disk cache keys
hashed every switch. None of these change pixels.
- Switches::pixels, Layer::same_pixels and Comp::same_pixels (exhaustive
field lists, so a new field must be considered) and Comp::pixel_form.
- Layer cache keys hash Switches::pixels; the disk cache's comp content
key hashes Comp::pixel_form.
- Frames::identity: when a new revision's comps draw the same pixels as
those of the comp's last new identity, that identity (and the project
holding its comps' addresses) is kept, so the frames stay, also when the
switch is toggled back.
With audio on, playback skipped frames that weren't rendered yet. Now the
sound waits: until the frames ahead (to the end of the preview, or what
fits in the RAM preview) are cached, every frame shows as it renders,
silently, like a preview without audio; then the sound starts in sync.
Reaching an uncached frame stops the sound instead of skipping frames.
Tests: audio_lock_and_shy_switches_keep_the_frames (frames.rs, nested
comps and toggling back), audio_lock_and_shy_keep_cached_layers (engine),

- PanelKind::Viewer(n): more Composition viewers (panels::viewers). One is active (the full
interactive viewer, showing the active comp); the others show their own comp's frame at that
comp's current time (CPU or GPU frames, their own textures) and become active on a click or
their tab, their comp becoming the active comp.
- view.newViewer (View menu, the Composition panel menu, Alt+Shift+N): a new viewer of the
active comp next to the one in use, which is locked. Opening a comp while the active viewer
is locked shows it in an unlocked viewer, or a new one when every viewer is locked. Closing
the active viewer hands over to another with its comp. Tabs are named after their comp, with
their own lock and swatch; Preview full screen maximizes the active viewer.
- UI state: viewers (comp per viewer) and active_viewer (serde).
- Tests: ui_viewers (lock on New Viewer, routing, click to activate, all locked → new viewer,
close hand-over, tab titles; an ignored snapshot). The bounded-drag frames test asserts what
holds when freed addresses are reused. Docs: parity, control protocol.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- FrameKey's identity is the comp's content (frames::comp_content), not the project revision:
an edit keeps the cached frames of comps it doesn't touch and undo finds the frames of the
state it returns to. The identity hashes the addresses of the comps a comp draws (~0.1 ms on
the 1500-layer test project; the full content hash took ~117 ms), by value the footage, solids,
proxies and project settings; with expressions, every item. Frames::content_of keeps a
project snapshot per identity with frames (or in flight), so Arc::make_mut always copies an
edited comp and its address can't be reused meanwhile; past 64 identities the least recently
used go with their frames (long drags).
- drop_stale is gone (frames of other contents are evicted least-recently-shown first).
- disk_cache::comp_content_key covers items' proxies and Use Proxy (it served stale frames).
- Tests: frames (content keys, edits elsewhere and undo, bounded drags, in-place edit safety),
ui_ram_preview (end to end), the disk cache proxy key. Docs: roadmap (M4 done), parity.

ui-egui without expect()/unreachable!(): the frame pool is optional (rayon's global pool if the
OS refuses threads) and gets a panic_handler, because a panic in a rayon spawn() job aborts the
whole process by default; render-queue progress, the text-edit anchor and the GPU viewer
texture are bound where they're checked; the settings panel's Bool arm no longer panics.
Denies the panic lints in the crate.

- `FrameKey` carries a hash of the render options (`frames::opts_hash`): switching Fast
Previews (Draft / Fast Draft) or Realtime Shadows no longer shows frames rendered the other
way.
- Eviction drops the least recently shown frame (`Frames::get` touches it), not the oldest
inserted: a looping preview a little over budget no longer evicts the frame it shows next.
- Frames of earlier project revisions are dropped on every change (`Frames::drop_stale`); they
could never be shown again but held memory (and GPU textures) until evicted.
- The green cache bars (Timeline, Preview panel) count the frames of exactly what the viewer
shows — scale, 3D view / region of interest and options (`EffectcraftApp::shown_series`) —
instead of any frame at that scale.
- Playback loops compute the key's fixed part once (`EffectcraftApp::frame_series`).

- GPU in the browser: each frame worker opens its own WebGPU device (Gpu::request_deferred) and
renders the GPU compositor and GPU effects with deferred readbacks (effectcraft-gpu deferred):
readbacks keyed by content start with map_async and miss, the pass returns placeholders, the
layer cache's gate drops inserts, and FrameServer::resume renders again once the device
delivered. Backend Auto times whole frames per comp in the workers. Frames with effects go to
GPU workers instead of the page. CPU fallback without WebGPU in workers (?nogpuworkers).
- Fix: a WGSL constant (3.40282347e38) that Chrome rejects invalidated every GPU kernel in Chrome
(the page's compositor too); a test checks every float literal fits f32.
- Disk cache in the Origin Private File System: workers write sealed frame entries with sync
access handles (temp file + move), the page keeps the DiskIndex (LRU under the settings' limit,
at most half the quota) and reads hits instead of rendering; survives reloads; blue cache bar.
- Storage manager: Settings ▸ Disk ▸ Browser Storage (usage/quota, persistent storage, Clear
buttons, automation ids) and storage.info / storage.persist / storage.clear (StorageHost).
- Docs: web.md (GPU workers, deferred passes, disk cache, storage manager, threading design:
one engine instance per worker), architecture, preferences, parity (WEB-1), roadmap.
- Tests: deferred passes vs CPU on a real device, placeholder gating, frame server passes and
Auto, GPU worker routing + disk cache across a reload, storage commands and widgets, store
usage by kind; smoke test: GPU effect frames in workers with pixel parity, disk hits after a
reload, storage manager.

direct readback into Image; NaN-poisoned scratch images under test and
NaN-aware diffs; validation errors panic under test
- render: AutoPick (per comp / scale / path EWMA of CPU vs GPU frame times,
warm-up and periodic re-probe) behind Backend::Auto; viewer uses it too;
cached adjustment footprints (uploaded once)
- gpu fx_warp: Warp, Bezier Warp, CC Bend It, CC Page Turn, Smear, Reshape,

Viewer frames render in long-lived Web Workers holding a project replica
(engine::remote: structural JSON diff/patch, Mirror, FrameServer); the
frame cache hands jobs to a RemoteFrames renderer (UI-thread fallback).
Roto Brush propagation runs in a job worker and streams segmentations
back (FrameSeg binary form), relayed to frame workers. Control-channel
wait:true commands whose job is offloaded reply when it ends. The Media
Browser browses a pluggable Browser: the file system on the desktop;
browser storage and File System Access folders on the web.

The 3D Camera Tracker analysis joins the offloaded jobs. The disk cache stays off in the
browser (std::env::temp_dir panics on wasm32 once a config store exists).

- Persistence: settings, shortcuts, recent projects, imported media, saved projects and
auto-saves live in OPFS (IndexedDB fallback) through an in-memory mirror flushed in the
background (apps/effectcraft-web/src/store.rs, persist.rs); ConfigStore gains FileOps so
auto-save / recovery work in the browser store; the session snapshot restores the last
project + editor state on reload; File > Open Recent works from storage.
- Audio: Web Audio output (AudioWorklet, ScriptProcessor fallback) fed by AudioPlayback::pump
on wasm32; A/V sync from AudioContext.currentTime; meters; unlock on first gesture.
- Background jobs: engine::offload (WorkerRequest/WorkerReply protocol, Offload trait,
run_request); Render Queue, tracker, mask tracker, Warp Stabilizer and Roto Freeze run in Web
Workers (a second engine instance on the shared compiled module), progress streamed back;
cancel terminates the worker.
- GPU: WebGPU viewer frames drawn straight from the compositor's texture (gpu_display on
wasm32 when the viewer draws plainly); async readback (Gpu::read_display_async) for pixels.
- PWA: manifest, service worker precaching the build (xtask fills list/version), icons copied
from assets/app-icon; COOP/COEP kept from cached responses; offline reload works.
- window.effectcraft: saveToBrowser, listStored, removeStored, flush; info() reports storage,
audio, gpu, workers.
- Tests: native store + protocol + offload (render, track, cancel) tests; smoke.mjs extended
(GPU path, worker render responsiveness, audio gesture + playback, reload persistence,
Open Recent, offline reload).

Region-of-interest frames render on the CPU path; the viewer keeps main's
frame drawing (Show Channel, exposure, ROI) and reads GPU-composited frames
back. Keeping frames as native egui-wgpu textures stays implemented behind
RenderSource::gpu_display (off).

The desktop viewer builds the GPU compositor on egui-wgpu's device and,
with Mercury GPU Acceleration, renders frames into RGBA8 textures that are
registered with egui-wgpu and drawn directly (no readback); the RAM preview
cache holds them under a video-memory budget. Pixels are read back only on
demand (Info panel, eyedroppers, histograms). Project Settings gets the
Video Rendering and Effects renderer choice. ui_gpu test: GPU viewer frame
matches the CPU one (skips without an adapter).

A real Settings model in the engine (`engine::prefs`): serde, versioned, dotted keys
(`general.undoLevels`, `labels.3.name`), migration of older layouts, unknown keys kept,
persisted through a `ConfigStore` trait (platform config dir on the desktop; MemoryConfig
for tests; the web app can back it with localStorage).
- After Effects 2026 pages (General … Scripting & Expressions) as a schema shared by the
dialog, `prefs.pages` and docs/preferences.md (rows not wired yet are listed there and
kept in step by a test).
- Commands: prefs.get, prefs.set {key, value | values}, prefs.reset {page?}, prefs.open
{page?}, prefs.pages.
- Wired settings: undo levels, path point size, tool tips, layers at comp start / CTI,
default spatial interpolation linear, Home screen on launch, new project template,
rendering progress in Info, adaptive resolution limit, cache when idle, fast previews,
theme + UI brightness, label names/colours everywhere (Label menu, timeline, project,
render queue, viewer), label colour for handles, grid colour/spacing/subdivisions, guide
colour, safe margins, still footage duration, sequence fps, audio output device and
output mapping, layer / footage / preview cache budgets, default 3D renderer.
- Settings dialog: AE's left page list + right content, OK / Cancel (restores) / Previous /
Next, every widget with an automation id.

- apps/effectcraft-web (L6): eframe web runner booting the shared EffectcraftApp with a browser
session: in-memory file table, <input type=file> pickers and drag-and-drop for open/import,
downloads for Save and Render Queue outputs (several files as one stored .zip), and the
window.effectcraft promise API over the control channel. Demo project on start.
- wasm32 runtime fixes: web-time for Instant/SystemTime (render, engine, export, ui-egui);
Frames renders queued jobs on the UI thread (Frames::pump) instead of a thread pool;
Render Queue runs inline; relative outputs resolve under / ; control PNGs inline.
- effectcraft-export: per-job output Sink (files to memory instead of disk); host FileExporter
carries it; test that sink exports touch no file.
- xtask web [--dev] [--serve PORT] (wasm-bindgen 0.2.129, optional wasm-opt, COOP/COEP server);

Resolve conflicts with perf (layer cache / Arc<Buf>), export (RenderOpts.view: None
for output), timeline (separate dimensions + one-node POI visibility), mask/pen
viewer gestures (alongside camera tools and view-aware layer matrices), key

3D path tangent honours separated position; DOF blurs a per-frame copy so cached

- Viewer renders through the comp's 3D view (RenderOpts.view; FrameKey hashes
the view camera), shows the view name, and the bottom-bar 3D View dropdown
(automation id viewer.view3d) switches Active Camera/Front/…/Custom View 3.
- Orbit / Pan / Dolly tools drag the current view (camera layer in Active
Camera, merged into one undo step; view cameras otherwise).
- Handles, gizmo and picking go through the view camera; 3D layers move in
the view plane at their depth.
- Camera frustum + POI and light position/direction wireframes
(viewer.camera.<id>, viewer.light.<id>).
- Camera Settings / Light Settings dialogs open from New Camera/Light,
Camera/Light Settings and Layer Settings; OK runs the engine commands.
- Timeline: POI only for two-node cameras/auto-oriented lights; "Z Rotation"
label on 3D layers.
- Headless egui_kittest tests (UI wiring + opt-in wgpu snapshots); fix the
remaining workspace clippy lints.

- render: LayerCache (content-keyed processed-layer cache: source -> masks ->
effects, keyed by a hash of the layer's non-transform props evaluated at the
frame time, solid item, switches, scale; time folded in for clock-driven
effects / wiggle paths). Static and transform-only layers render once;
edits only re-render the edited layer. Session + UI frame jobs share it.
- effects: TIME_DEPENDENT list + test that every clock-reading effect is listed.
- raster: affine composite fast path (per-row span clipping, unchecked interior
bilinear, integer-translation copies, inlined Normal blend), checked against
composite_warp_reference; box/Gaussian blur without transposes, two
ping-pong buffers; accumulate_warp so motion blur sums into one buffer
instead of one full-frame image per sub-sample.
- ui: viewer frame is urgent and jumps the prefetch queue; stale-revision jobs
are dropped; paused prefetch waits for the viewer frame; "Frame Render Time"
reports viewer frames only; parallel f32 -> Color32 conversion.
- cli: `frame --bench N` (per-layer/per-effect timings, wall + CPU time) and
`frame --bench-play N` (consecutive frames with/without the layer cache).
- tests: cache transparency (scrub, edits of values/keys/effects/masks/
solids/text/timing), hit/miss accounting, time-dependent effects, demo
cached == uncached, fast warp/blur/accumulate == reference.
