Add an interface-language preference. It defaults to the system's
language on first run (sys-locale, native only) and is switched by hand
from the View tab, next to Dark Mode, or with app.language.english /
app.language.japanese over the control channel. It is saved in ui.json.
Follows the filmcraft house convention: a Language enum and a
table of English-to-Japanese strings with English fallback, so coverage
can grow incrementally. Japanese chrome renders without any bundled
font: the CJK fallback faces already appended to every family cover
kana and kanji.
The ribbon chrome all flows through the small_button/big_button/
toggle_button/split_button/icon_button helpers and menu_items, so
translating there localises the whole ribbon in one place; the language
of the frame is read from egui context data (i18n::current). Command
ids, file names and document text are never translated.
Local clippy 1.96 flags pre-existing patterns the code has always had:
manual range-contains comparisons, a dead `|| true` filter and a
simplifiable boolean. None change behaviour; they only clear the lints
so `cargo xtask ci` passes on a current toolchain.
The DMG opened as a plain Finder window. It now shows the app icon's figure on
the GridCraft colour, with GridCraft.app and the Applications link side by side.
Same approach as PhotoCraft's and VectorCraft's (storytold/photocraft#1201,
storytold/vectorcraft#493).
- packaging/macos/dmg/: background.svg (source; text outlined, no paper grain,
the figure an <image> of assets/app-icon), background.tiff (1x + 2x HiDPI,
16-colour palette, Deflate, sRGB; ~26 KB)
and dmg-layout.DS_Store (Finder view settings: window, icon size 128,
positions, background).
- generate.py writes the TIFF and the layout on any OS, byte-for-byte
reproducible, with nothing from the machine that ran it (no paths, users,
disk names or volume UUIDs).
- package.sh copies them into the staging folder; the image is still built with
hdiutil makehybrid. Nothing extra runs in the signing job.
- The volume name drops the version: the layout finds the background through
an alias that includes the volume name. The DMG file name keeps the version.

A Japanese (or Chinese/Korean) workbook opened fine — the engine reads the
strings correctly — but every kanji and kana drew as a .notdef box, because
egui's bundled fonts carry no CJK coverage and nothing added a CJK face to the
fallback chain.
Append a system CJK face to every font family (UI, cell, serif, mono): a
Japanese face first for correct kana/JIS kanji, a Chinese face for breadth, and
a Hangul face for Korean. epaint picks the first face in a family that has the
glyph, so Latin still renders from the Latin fonts and only Han/Kana/Hangul
reach the CJK fonts. No font bytes are bundled (AGENTS.md): families are loaded
from the OS, and a machine with no CJK font simply keeps the old behaviour.
Tests: the CJK keys end every family chain (Latin stays first); and the
proportional family resolves 「カテゴリ」 to real glyphs, not the replacement
character — verified to fail without the fallback.
eframe's default wgpu instance enables PRIMARY | GL on Windows. Creating
the OpenGL backend can crash inside AMD's atio6axx.dll before the window
appears, so the app exits silently at launch. When WGPU_BACKEND is not
set, the Windows instance now enables only DirectX 12; an explicit
WGPU_BACKEND is still honoured. macOS, Linux and web are unchanged.
Same fix as storytold/designcraft#168 and storytold/filmcraft#179.

The engine now preserves a workbook's VBA project, but the UI had no surface
for it and silently dropped every open-time warning. Give preserved macros an
honest, Excel-shaped home without a false "Enable Content":
- Info bar under the ribbon (Excel's message-bar slot) showing the warning a
`file.open` result carries. A VBA project gets an amber bar reading "This
workbook contains VBA macros. GridCraft keeps them intact when you save, but
does not run them." with a "What this means" button; anything else becomes a
blue informational bar. Dismissable; a clean open clears a stale notice.
- Macros dialog (Automate ▸ Macros, Alt+F8): lists GridCraft's own scripts and
the preserved VBA project (presence + size, not module names — the blob is
opaque). Mirrors Excel's Developer ▸ Macros without claiming to run VBA.
- Status-bar badge "Macros preserved (not executed)" whenever the workbook
carries a VBA project.
New panel `notice_bar` reuses theme tokens (notice_warn_*/notice_info_*), so it
follows light/dark. Two new UI commands, `ui.notice` and `ui.notice.dismiss`,
reach it from the control channel.
Tests: info bar appears for a macro workbook and clears on dismiss; a non-VBA
warning becomes an info bar; clean open clears the notice; the macros dialog
lists the VBA entry; status bar renders with a VBA project; Alt+F8 opens the
dialog. Snapshot-verified in light and dark.
Builds a macro-enabled .xlsm with a fake xl/vbaProject.bin, runs it through
`gridcraft-cli run`, and asserts the blob comes back byte-identical with the
macro-enabled content type and vbaProject relationship intact — the
open → edit → save path a user would exercise by hand.
Opening an .xlsm and saving it silently stripped xl/vbaProject.bin, turning a
macro-enabled workbook into a macro-free one — data loss for anyone whose work
depends on macros. GridCraft still does not run VBA, but it now carries the
project through unchanged.
- model: `Workbook.vba_project: Option<Vec<u8>>` (base64 in JSON via a new
`b64::opt` helper). `None` = no macros.
- xlsx read: capture the `vbaProject` relationship's bytes instead of warning
and dropping them; warn that macros are kept but not executed.
- xlsx write: when present, emit `xl/vbaProject.bin` byte-identical, add the
`.../relationships/vbaProject` relationship, switch the main part to the
macro-enabled content type (`...sheet.macroEnabled.main+xml`) and add the
`application/vnd.ms-office.vbaProject` override.
- engine: `view.macros` lists the preserved project alongside GridCraft's own
scripts (`{"kind":"vba","executed":false}`), so callers can see it is there.
- ROADMAP: scope now "preserve, don't execute" (was "out of scope").
Tests: round-trip byte-identical blob + correct content types/relationship;
capture from a foreign-produced .xlsm; a macro-free workbook stays clean.
Local clippy (1.96) flags pre-existing code that an older toolchain accepted;
these lints fire on clean main and block `cargo xtask ci`. All rewrites are
behavior-preserving:
- core/date.rs, numfmt/render.rs, functions/math.rs, functions/stat.rs:
`!x.is_finite() || x < a || x >= b` -> `!(a..b).contains(&x)` (Range::contains
is false for NaN/inf, matching the existing is_finite guard).
- functions/util.rs: `!(A && !B)` -> `!A || B`.
- engine/cmd/file.rs: drop a dead `.filter(|| true)`.
- ui-egui/grid.rs: `find(|| true)` was always the first table (use `.first()`);
`wrap || Justify || (nl && wrap)` -> `wrap || Justify`.
- ui-egui/formula_bar.rs: `tab || (enter && false)` -> `tab`.
- engine/cmd/spelling.rs: split the wasm/non-wasm dictionary init so the
non-wasm `mut` no longer warns under wasm check.
Excel-encrypted workbooks are CFB/OLE2 compound files (magic D0CF11E0),
not zip packages. sniff() now returns Format::Encrypted for them, and
open_bytes reports a clear password-protected message instead of the
cryptic 'not a valid zip package' error.
- AppImages embed gh-releases-zsync update information and ship a .zsync beside them;
the linux job installs zsync and checks both.
- New flatpak job (x86_64 on ubuntu-24.04, aarch64 on ubuntu-24.04-arm) repackages the
linux tarball with packaging/linux/flatpak-bundle.sh and the new bundle manifest; the
from-source manifest gets the same commented finish-args, and packaging-lint checks
that the two agree.
- Jobs that sign nothing (version, linux, flatpak, web, FreeBSD packaging) no longer use
the release environment, so a branch dispatch is a dry run; the draft-release job still
needs the signed jobs and only runs on the release branch.
- README: Downloads section listing every build.

Excel anchors a floating object to the grid in one of three ways, stored in the
file as the drawing anchor's `editAs`: "move and size with cells" (twoCellAnchor,
the default), "move but don't size with cells" (oneCellAnchor / editAs="oneCell")
and "don't move or size with cells" (editAs="absolute"). GridCraft had no such
concept: xlsx import dropped `editAs`, export always wrote a plain twoCellAnchor,
and sorting/filtering never moved an object — so pictures stayed put when their
rows were reordered.
Model: add `AnchorMode` on `Anchor` (serde default = MoveAndSize, so existing
documents round-trip unchanged).
xlsx: read the anchor kind and `editAs` into the mode; write it back out
(editAs="oneCell"/"absolute" as Excel does).
Engine: sorting now moves objects anchored inside the sorted body with their
lines, re-fitting "move and size" objects, keeping "move but don't size"
objects' size, and leaving absolute ones pinned. Structural insert/delete
honours the same rule (previously it moved every object's cell unconditionally
and ignored shapes). New `object.setAnchorMode` command sets an object's mode;
`arrange.selectionPane` reports it.
Tests: sort moves images with their rows; absolute objects stay put across a
sort and a row delete; move-only keeps its size; the mode survives an xlsx
round-trip; the drawing fixture parses all three anchor kinds.
eprintln! panics when standard error is a broken pipe (a GUI launch on
Windows), and a panic inside the panic hook aborts. The "no log file"
message goes through log::warn! (standard error only by then); the panic
hook's fallback writes to standard error with write_fmt and ignores the
error. Same fix as storytold/vectorcraft#465.
The font dropdown showed a hardcoded 17-name list and cells always
rendered in the built-in Calibri/role font, so a font installed on the
machine could not be listed or chosen. Both trace to one constraint:
egui panics when asked for a FontFamily::Name that was never bound to
font data, so only the 8 built-in roles were ever bound.
Scan the platform font folders for installed families (a bounded read of
each file's name table via skrifa, already compiled transitively through
epaint), bind the faces a workbook actually uses into egui as
fnt:{family}:{b|n}{i|n} roles chained to the defaults, and offer the
installed families in the font combos after the standard set. cell_family
returns the installed role when it is bound, else the previous bucketing,
so it never names an unbound family. The scan runs in the background and
the first frame that rebinds skips painting, like the existing startup
gate. Native only; wasm keeps the standard list.
Incidental: newer local clippy flagged pre-existing lints in untouched
crates (no toolchain is pinned); fixed behavior-preservingly so the gate
passes.
The desktop app installed no logger, so every log::warn!/log::error! in
the workspace was discarded (a sample that failed to build, wgpu and naga
warnings), and panics a command's guard recovered from only reached
standard error. A launch from a desktop menu has no terminal either, so
there was nothing to attach to a bug report.
apps/gridcraft/src/logging.rs (no new dependency):
- standard error plus logs/gridcraft.log next to ui.json and prefs.json
(~/.config/gridcraft/logs, or under $XDG_CONFIG_HOME); each launch
rotates the previous log to gridcraft.1.log and .2.log, so the log of a
run that crashed survives the next start; the file is capped at 16 MiB
- records logged before the settings directory is known are buffered
(bounded) and written once the file is attached
- default levels: info for gridcraft*, warn for everything else;
RUST_LOG replaces them with env_logger-style directives
- never panics: an unusable directory or a failed write leaves standard
error as the only sink
- runs with GRIDCRAFT_NO_PREFS (agents' test runs) log to standard error
only, so they don't rotate away the user's own logs
The logger is installed first in main, followed by a panic hook that
reports every panic, caught or not, through log::error! (with a backtrace
when RUST_BACKTRACE is set). The file is opened after argument parsing
(--version leaves no file). The start-up messages in main and the
control channel's go through the logger. Documented in README.md (Logs).
Custom macOS larger runners in a runner group do not pick up jobs; the
built-in M2 Pro label does. Only release.yml uses it, and the
actions_macos_xl budget caps the monthly spend.

The standard macOS runners are shared with all CI and queue for an hour or
more. The macos-release runner (GitHub-hosted M2 Pro) is in a runner group
usable only by release.yml on the release branch, with a monthly spend cap
on the actions_macos_xl SKU.

* About: contributors compiled in from contributors.json (grab bag + table, sortable, name toggle)
Adds an About GridCraft dialog (tabs About · Contributors · Models) following the craftrules
standard (standards/contributors.md): contributors/contributors.json is generated by
craftrules/scripts/contributors.py and baked into the binary by crates/ui-egui/build.rs as
static tables. Each contributor line: @username, opt-in display/real name, PRs, commits,
lines +/−/Δ, binary assets +/−, first/last commit. Sortable by every column; alphabetical
ignores case and the leading @.
Reachable from the macOS app menu (About GridCraft, previously a web link), Help ▸
Contributors…, and Automate ▸ About GridCraft in the ribbon (all platforms and the web).
Dialog hyperlinks open through the host's open_url service. The snapshot example gains
--dialog 'name={json}' for offscreen renders of dialogs.
