System Settings > Desktop & Dock > "Close windows when quitting an application" is the system's own version of Preferences > "Reopen the files that were open when PdfCraft last closed". Read it once at launch (defaults read -g, 500 ms guard, as text_scale.rs does for gsettings) and use it as the preference's starting value, before the saved preferences are restored. A choice made in Preferences is persisted and still wins; other systems keep starting off.
