Holding the brush still keeps Twirl, Pucker and Bloat applying, scaled by the
time held: a new Tool::tick (time supplied by the host: canvas frames, or
`holdMs` on ui.pointer / pointer_gesture events) repeats the last point every
0.1 s, one more dab there. Liquify never touches graphs, meshes, type, symbols,
images, or envelopes, repeats and blends with their contents, nor guides in
selection mode; those under the brush come back in `skipped` with a `warning`
that the status bar shows (UiRequest::Status). A drag applies only the dabs
each new sample adds (the stroke's state is kept between previews), giving the
same result as the whole stroke, so journal replay still reproduces it.

The Perspective Selection tool shows the selection's bounding box in perspective; its handles
scale in plane space (perspective.transform; Shift proportional, Alt from the centre). Alt-drag
moves copies that stay attached, pressing 5 while dragging moves along the plane's normal
(ToolKey::Digit, delivered by the canvas and MCP press_key), and the arrow keys nudge in
perspective (perspective.nudge). Transform Again repeats the last perspective move or scale in
plane space. Attachments (plane and depth) now live on the objects (Node.perspective), so copies,
duplicates and pastes keep them; grids from older files hand theirs over. Homography moves to
vectorcraft-geom. Hint-bar text for the tool.

Double-clicking a Liquify tool opens its Tool Options (dialog liquifyOptions):
the shared Global Brush Dimensions (Width, Height, Angle, Intensity, Use
Pressure Pen), the tool's options (Detail, Simplify with its checkbox, Twirl
Rate, Complexity, Brush Affects, Horizontal/Vertical) and Show Brush Size.
The canvas captures pen pressure from pen/touch force, ui.pointer and MCP
pointer events take `pressure`, and object.liquify takes [x, y, pressure].
Fixes: LiquifyParams::to_json now sends affectAnchors/In/Out; Alt-drag sizes
the brush from its current size (Shift keeps proportions) instead of
collapsing it. Hint-bar text for the seven tools. Registers the MCP Liquify
tests file added in M8.2.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Width and Puppet Warp tools now claim Delete and Backspace while they
have width points or pins selected, so the shortcut routing (desktop and MCP
press_key) removes those instead of clearing the artwork. With nothing of the
tool's selected the keys still clear the selected objects. Headless Backspace
clears the selection like the desktop app does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each tool keeps its options (a table in vectorcraft_tools::settings) when another
tool is chosen, across document switches, and in the saved preferences
(Prefs::tool_settings). The 7 Liquify tools share one set of Global Brush
Dimensions; the Symbolism tools share their brush. tool.setOption takes
{values} and a `tool` (another tool's options are stored for later), returns
the options, and works headless (MCP host command).

document.export {format: "psd"} writes layered bitmaps (8 bits per channel),
written from the format's public specification: RGB, CMYK (ink amounts) or
grayscale, the resolution and an embedded profile, PackBits channels, and the
merged image (the flat render). layers (default true) draws each top-level
layer alone as a pixel layer, cropped to what it paints, with its name,
opacity and blend mode; a background colour becomes a Background layer.
maxEditability turns layers and sublayers into groups and every object into a
layer named as the Layers panel names it (text by its text); clipping, masked,
knockout or appearance-carrying layers stay one layer. hiddenLayers writes
hidden layers hidden instead of leaving them out; layers: false writes a flat
image on white. At most 30000 pixels a side.
Export As offers PSD with the psdOptions dialog (the PNG Options rows, then
Color Model, Flat Image / Write Layers with Maximum Editability and Include
Hidden Layers, Embed ICC Profile). Tests read the files back with the psd
crate (MIT OR Apache-2.0, a dev-dependency).

Window > Asset Export lists the document's assets as thumbnails: art
dragged in off the canvas (or added with +) becomes one asset per object,
or one of them all with Alt; Object > Collect for Export does the same.
Assets name their objects, so they follow edits (moving the art moves the
crop) and deleting the art removes it from its asset. Click selects,
double-click renames, the bin removes. The panel's export settings are
Export for Screens' own format rows on the document's shared settings, and
Export writes each asset alone, cropped to its art, into a picked folder
(the web downloads a zip). Export for Screens' Assets tab lists the assets
with checkboxes and exports the checked ones.
Commands: assets.add, assets.remove, assets.rename, assets.list,
assets.export, assets.settings.set; document.exportForScreens takes
assets. Model: Document.assets (ExportAsset {id, name, nodes}).

document.export {format: "tga"} writes uncompressed true-colour Targa files
through the raster export path (resolution, background, anti-aliasing,
artboard ranges): depth 16 (5-5-5 with a one-bit alpha), 24 (flattened on
white) or 32 (8-bit alpha), rows bottom-up, with the version 2 footer.
Export As offers it with the tgaOptions dialog (Depth).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.export {format: "bmp"} writes BMP through the raster export path:
depth 1 (black and white), 4 or 8 (a palette by reduction and dither,
optionally RLE4/RLE8), 16 (5-5-5), 24 or 32 (with alpha, a version 4
header); colorModel rgb or gray; fileFormat windows or os2 (a core header);
flipRows writes top-down rows (a negative height). Impossible combinations
are refused as bad params. Export As offers it with the bmpOptions dialog,
which keeps its choices writable together; BMP moves from read-only to read
and write (tests that used .bmp as the unwritable format now use .dwg).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.export {format: "tiff"} writes baseline TIFF through the raster
export path (resolution, background, anti-aliasing, artboard ranges):
colorModel rgb (transparency as unassociated alpha), cmyk (ink amounts,
CMYK colours keep their inks) or gray, lzw (weezl), byteOrder little (II)
or big (MM), embedIcc, and the resolution tags. Export As offers it with
the tiffOptions dialog; TIFF moves from read-only to read and write.
The TIFF writer is shared: EPS previews now use it (and its PackBits)
instead of their own copy, so eps depends on render (layers allow it).

New crates/metafile (L3, pure Rust): hand-written EMF and WMF writers over
one shared document walk. EMF keeps Bezier paths, solid brushes, geometric
pens (width, caps, joins, miter limit, user-style dashes), clipping masks as
path clips, images (StretchDIBits, or AlphaBlend with transparency) placed by
a world transform, type as outlines; gradients become images clipped to their
shape and pattern fills their tiles clipped to it. The header's frame is the
artboard in 0.01 mm on a 100 px/mm reference device. WMF flattens curves into
polygons in 16-bit units behind a placeable header (with its checksum),
numbers objects as players do, and reports what it leaves out (clipping,
transparency, gradients, rotated images).
document.export {format: emf|wmf} (and serialize, export) writes one artboard,
or one file per artboard with useArtboards (false: the art's bounds); raster
effects are rendered to images first, as for PDF. Export As lists EMF and WMF.

New crates/eps (L3): a hand-written EPS writer. A DSC header with
%%BoundingBox and %%HiResBoundingBox (y up from the origin), %%LanguageLevel
and spot colours; paths filled and stroked with caps, joins, miter limits
and dashes (strokes a plain line can't draw as filled outlines, brushes as
their art), clipping groups, linear and radial gradients as smooth
shadings at Level 3 and stepped fills at Level 2 or with compatible
gradient printing, patterns as tiles, freeform gradients and placed images
as images (Flate with masked transparent pixels at Level 3, run-length at
Level 2), type as glyph outlines, spot colours as Separation spaces and
overprints when preserved; RGB written as CMYK on request. A TIFF preview
(1-bit or colour, transparent or opaque) behind the binary header, a PNG
thumbnail and the native document in comments (eps::native and
eps::thumbnail read them back for a later import).
document.export {format: eps} and document.exportEps: transparency is
flattened first with a flattener preset (built-in or saved) and options;
the visible art's bounds, or with useArtboards one file per artboard named
{stem}_{artboard}.eps. Export As lists EPS, then EPS Options
(ui.epsOptionsDialog for agents, remembered between exports).

Artboards: All, a range or Full Document (one file per format: a PDF of
every artboard, other formats the bounds of all art), Include Bleed
(artboards grown by the document's bleed). Rows size files as a factor,
100w, 100h or 72ppi (suffixes @2x, @100w, @100h), and choose PNG, PNG 8,
JPG 100/80/50, WebP, GIF, SVG or PDF. Create Sub-folders (by size, by
format, or a row's own folder) and the presets Mobile 1x/2x/3x and
Density buckets (ldpi…xxxhdpi sub-folders). The gear opens Format
Settings: per-format options for every row of that format (the raster
and SVG options dialogs' rows, the PDF preset). Open Location after
Export shows the first file. The dialog has Artboards and Assets tabs.
The params of the last export are saved in the document
(Document.export_settings, not an undo step), read with
document.exportSettings, and the dialog reopens on them.

document.exportForScreens takes zip: true to pack every file into one
store-only .zip (returned as dataBase64 without a folder, written there
with one); without a folder the files come back as base64. The engine's
Export for Screens moves to fileio/screens.rs, with a small ZIP writer
(fileio/zip.rs).
The dialog starts in the user's Desktop (else home, on every OS), has a
folder picker button (the Services.pick_folder the Links panel uses) and
stays open when the export fails. On the web it has no folder: OK reads
"Download" (DialogSpec.ok_label) and the files download, several as one
zip. file.exportForScreens with params goes through io::export_for_screens.

New crates/cad (L3): a hand-written ASCII DXF writer. Layers become DXF
layers (hidden: off, locked, non-printing: not plotted), straight paths
LWPOLYLINE (POLYLINE before R14), curves cubic SPLINEs through every
anchor, fills solid HATCHes (outlines in R12), strokes lines with a
lineweight and a linetype per dash pattern, type TEXT or glyph outlines,
placed images IMAGE entities linked to PNG or JPEG files. Units and
scale ($INSUNITS), scaled lineweights, 8/16/256 indexed or true colour
(420), transparency (440), Preserve Appearance / Maximize Editability,
Alter Paths for Appearance, Outline Text.
document.export {format: dxf} and document.exportDxf; useArtboards
writes one drawing per artboard; selectedOnly (any export) writes the
selection in its layers. Export As lists DXF (then DXF Options,
ui.dxfOptionsDialog for agents, remembered between exports) and DWG
greyed out; document.formats lists DWG and PICT as unsupported with a
hint, and exporting or opening them answers with it.

remote_connect_fails_fast bound a port and dropped it, so another test or
process could take the port before the connect and make it succeed. It now
holds a socket bound without listening (socket2, a test-only dependency):
connections to it are refused and nothing else can bind it meanwhile. It
also checks the failure comes within 5 s.

File Info's dates come from the clock, so documents made or saved a second
apart differed: journal_replay_reproduces_document and
rich_fixture_satisfies_invariants_and_undoes_to_blank failed at random.
One approach for every clock-derived date: it is a command input that
defaults to now, and the journal records the value used.
- file.new takes created? and document.save / file.saveAs take modified?
(Unix seconds, or null for none; default now), through date_param /
clock_date on the one save path (save_with), so Save, Save As and the
UI's save stamp alike; Save a Copy still leaves the dates.
- Their journal entries always record the date used, so replaying the
journal makes the same document whenever it runs. Actions recorded from
the journal (Session::journal_for_action) leave those dates out, so
playing an action later dates the document then.
- Test fixtures date their documents fixtures::CREATED, and the MCP
property test dates its local document as the headless one, so
documents built at different moments compare equal.

- WebP takes lossless and quality; there is no permissive pure-Rust lossy encoder yet, so
lossless: false writes lossless with a warning (the WebP Options dialog says so).
- document.export {format: "txt", encoding: utf8|utf16, lineEndings: lf|crlf,
selectionOnly}: the stories in stacking order (back to front), a thread once, hidden
objects and template layers left out; UTF-16 is little-endian with a byte order mark.
Export As → Text opens Text Export Options.
- File → Save for Office Documents… (document.exportForOffice {ppi, transparent, artboard,
path}): the artboard as a PNG at 72/150/300 ppi on white or transparent, through a small
dialog in the app.
document.formats' writable list and the MCP export tool's enum gain txt.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.export {format: "png8" | "gif"} reduces the art to a palette of at most `colors`
(2–256) entries: median cut over a 15-bit histogram refined by k-means (perceptual,
selective or adaptive weighting), or the web-safe, black-and-white or grey palettes; art
with that many colours or fewer keeps them exactly. Dithering is Floyd–Steinberg diffusion,
an 8×8 ordered pattern or noise, with an amount. Pixels under half opacity become one
transparent entry; partly transparent edges blend over the matte. PNG-8 is an indexed PNG
(PLTE, tRNS, 1–8 bits per pixel, Adam7); GIF is a GIF89a (optionally interlaced). Both are in
document.formats, Export As (PNG-8 / GIF Options dialogs) and Export for Screens.
document.formats' writable list and the MCP export tool's format enum gain gif and png8
(their tests list them).

Save As offers VectorCraft, VectorCraft Template, PDF, SVG and SVGZ and asks
for the chosen format's options before writing: SVG Options for SVG/SVGZ, the
Save PDF dialog for PDF (its OK finishes the save); on the web a Save As
dialog first names the file and picks the format. A document opened from or
saved as SVG/PDF remembers its format and options in one place
(DocState.format, save_options: the SVG options, or every Save PDF setting),
so Save writes it again; the result's warnings name what the format loses,
then the encoder's notes. Save a Copy writes "<name> copy.<ext>" and leaves
the path, title and modified state alone. Save is off for a clean saved
document, and Save as PDF... is in the File menu.
Engine: document.save, file.saveAs and file.saveCopy take {path?, format?,
options?, svg?} (SVG options also flat) and write linked images beside an
SVG; file.formatOptions reads a format's options. save_plan/save_with are the
one save path of every frontend, on the shared SVG encoder (one SVGZ path).
The template format is writable. Save panels get per-format filters, a folder
and a suggested name.

Preserve Editing (on in the VectorCraft Default preset) embeds the
native document in the PDF as an embedded file with a hash of the pages
it was written with. document.open of a PDF, .ai or .ait restores it
exactly (restored: true) and falls back to importing the artwork, with a
first warning saying why, when the pages were changed elsewhere or the
data can't be read; SVG and PDF share that fallback and its warnings.
The legacy drawcraft payload name is read too. vectorcraft_pdf gains
editing(), ImportReport.native and PdfOptions.native.
document.save / file.saveAs / Save a Copy write .ai (format "ai" or an
.ai path): every artboard as a PDF that always carries the document and
takes the PDF options; a restored .ai keeps its path so Save writes .ai
again, and .ait templates open their document untitled. The desktop
save dialog lists the formats Save writes. Choosing a standard turns
Preserve Editing off (PDF/A refuses it), Export for Screens and PDFs of
some artboards leave it out with a warning.

A linked image (`ImageObject.link`, now a LinkInfo: absolute path, path relative to the document,
size, modification time, hash, page; old path strings still load) keeps a low-resolution preview
(`ImageBlob.proxy`, at most 256 px a side) that a native save writes in place of the pixels of
images only linked images show. Opening a native document reads the linked files again, looking
for each at its path, then relative to the document and by name in its folder: missing files
show their preview, modified ones are read again only with Update Links: Automatically.
`document.open` reports `missingLinks`, `modifiedLinks` and `updatedLinks`.
links.check reports each link's status, links.update reads modified files again and
links.relink points images at another file or at same-named files in a folder (each keeps its
bounds; one undo step). In the app, a document opened without its linked files asks about each
(Replace…, Ignore, Apply to All), then offers to update modified links when the preference asks.
The renderer caches previews apart from the file's pixels; the Eyedropper samples previews in
the object's pixel space.

File > Export > Export As... (file.exportAs) picks any writable format and Use Artboards: All
or a range writes one file per artboard, <file>-<artboard>.<ext> (a PDF keeps them as pages);
off, the export covers the bounds of the visible art (an artless document is refused before the
save dialog). The format's options dialog follows: PNG/JPEG/WebP Options, SVG Options, or Save
PDF for artboards as pages. document.export takes useArtboards for raster formats (true: one
file per chosen artboard, default all) and PDF (false: the art's bounds), and the app's exports
return every file written and the encoder's warnings.

Files dropped on the canvas of an open document are placed at the drop point (linked; Shift
embeds); dropped on the tab bar or with no document open they open and join Open Recent Files.
The canvas is outlined while files are dragged over it. On the web, drag events give the drop
point and the files arrive through the inbox.
File > Place picks several files. file.place.queue loads the place cursor (the `place` tool):
a click places the current file at 100% with its top-left corner there, a drag places it at the
dragged size with its aspect kept, the arrow keys cycle the files and Esc discards one; the
previous tool returns after the last. The cursor shows the file's thumbnail and a count badge.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
file.place {path | name+dataBase64, link, template, replace, at, rect, page, crop} places a
file as one undo step without touching the clipboard. Raster images come in at 100% of the
resolution their file declares (PNG pHYs, JFIF/EXIF, TIFF, BMP; 72 ppi otherwise), linked to
their path by default; SVG becomes one group with its embedded images; a PDF/.ai page or a
native document's artboard becomes one clipped group. The images, symbols, patterns and
swatches the art uses join the document (renamed on conflict). Replace keeps the replaced
object's stacking place and transform; Template puts the art on a new locked template layer
below the current one. file.place.info and image.info report size, ppi and colour mode.
File > Place picks a file and opens the Place dialog (Link, Template, Replace); the web picks
through the inbox. The Control bar shows Linked File/Embedded, the file name, colour mode and
ppi of the selected image.

svgz is a writable format with the SVG options (document.export,
serialize, save, Export for Screens): exactly the SVG export, gzipped.
SVGZ is recognised by its extension or the gzip magic bytes and opens,
places and pastes like SVG (clipboard.importSvg takes dataBase64 of SVG
or SVGZ); Export As SVG or Save As to a .svgz name writes it
compressed. Gzip lives in the svg crate (pure-Rust flate2, builds for
wasm) and unpacking stops at 512 MB.

document.export, serialize and save, and the Save As / Save a Copy UI
commands, take the SVG options flat or as svg: {…}: styling
(presentation, style, entities, css), outlineText, images (embed or
link; linked files are written next to the SVG), objectIds (layerNames,
minimal, unique), decimals 1–7, minify, responsive, useArtboards and
range "all" (one SVG per artboard), preserveEditing (the SVG reopens as
the full document) and metadata. Unknown keys are rejected and
document.formats lists every option with its default. Results carry the
SVG writer's warnings.
Save writes SVG to an .svg path and Save again reuses its options.
Export As SVG and Save As / Save a Copy to .svg open SVG Options (first
use: Internal CSS and Responsive, then the last-used choices) with a
read-only code view. Save a Copy no longer retargets the document.

Shipped code no longer unwraps, expects or panics: every one of the 124
unwrap()/expect()/panic!/unreachable! sites outside tests now handles the
failure (Result/Option, ?, let-else, defaults) and reports errors to the user.
- Lints: workspace clippy denies unwrap_used, expect_used, panic, todo,
unimplemented and unreachable; clippy.toml allows them in tests, and
integration tests, examples and testkit opt out explicitly.
- Safety net (vectorcraft_engine::guard): a panic in a top-level command rolls
the document back and returns EngineError::Internal; a panicking tool is
reset; the MCP server answers with an internal error and keeps serving; the
UI frame and each control request are guarded.
- APIs that hid failures now return them: Rendered::to_png/to_jpeg/to_webp
return Result (JPEG/WebP errors used to write empty files),
FontDb::face returns Option, Region::top returns Option.
- Fuzzing: engine/tests/import_fuzz.rs feeds garbage, hostile and mutated SVG
and PDF through import → render → export (30k cases locally, no panics).
- Docs: AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md rule, docs/development.md "Robustness" section,
README pointer and a PR template checklist.

With the Gradient tool on a freeform gradient the selected point shows its
spread as a dashed ring with a handle; dragging either sets the spread. A
point dragged out of the object is removed on release, and double-clicking a
point opens the gradientStop popover, which now edits the selected freeform
point (colour, opacity, spread). In Lines mode successive clicks draw one
smooth line (with a rubber band to the pointer); clicking an existing point
continues the line from it, and Escape or a click off the art ends it.

PNG/JPEG/WebP export renders the artboard at the requested scale with no size check. The CPU
rasteriser addresses at most 65535 pixels a side (and panics at that edge), so a large artboard at
a print resolution, e.g. the maximum 16383 pt artboard at 300 ppi (~68 000 px), or a screenshot at
scale 16, panicked inside vello_common: the desktop app or the MCP server exited and unsaved work
was lost.
`vectorcraft_render::raster_size` checks the pixel size first (at most 32 768 px a side and 268
megapixels, like Rasterize already refuses oversized images) and the export paths return an error
that names the size: `document.export` / `exportSelection` / `serialize`, the MCP `export` and
`screenshot` tools, File ▸ Export and the control protocol's `ui.render`.

Headless `open_file` (and `file.open` through run_command) had its own
loader that stopped at .vectorcraft and .svg, so an agent could not open
a PDF or an .ai file without the desktop app, although the engine and
`vectorcraft-cli` already import them through vectorcraft-pdf.
The headless loader now imports .pdf, .ai and any file starting with
%PDF through vectorcraft_pdf::import_with_report (default options, as
File ▸ Open uses), and returns the import warnings like the SVG path.
The open_file tool description lists the new types.

Edit -> "PDF Presets…"; the clipboard preferences read "Legacy vector
clipboard (no transparency)" / "Legacy vector clipboard" (keys copyAicb and
aicbMode unchanged); the second keyboard shortcut set is "Classic Defaults",
and the old set name is still accepted from saved UI preferences, imported
sets and shortcuts.preset. The MCP server instructions, the apply_effect and
create_graph tool descriptions, the text.createInPath params doc,
docs/mcp.md, the ui-egui crate description and the PDF compatibility docs
no longer name another vendor.
New `cargo xtask brands` (run by `cargo xtask ci`) fails on vendor product
or company names in Rust string literals (labels, params docs, menus,
panels, MCP definitions; comments and test code skipped), Cargo.toml
descriptions and text under docs/ and packaging/; a required legacy alias
is marked `brand-ok`. xtask shares one git file listing between the asset
and brand checks. docs/development.md describes the gate.
