Removes the engine's production expect() calls: background-job polling (camera, mask, roto,
point and warp tracking, render queue) uses let-else / if-let instead of take().expect("job"),
command helpers bind what they checked instead of re-reading it with expect, the menu bar falls
back to an empty tree (logged) instead of expect()ing that a constant parses, and
autotrace/text animator group lookups no longer expect a just-inserted group. perf.rs, the
benchmark harness behind `effectcraft-cli bench --ops`, opts out with a module-level allow.
Test-only unreachable!() calls become panic!() (clippy.toml allows panics in tests). Denies the
panic lints in the crate.

Session::execute runs every command (UI, CLI, control channel, MCP, scripts; file import,
export and save are commands too) through guard::guarded, which catch_unwinds a panic that
escapes the command and returns EngineError::Other("command `x` failed with an internal error
(...); it was stopped and your project is still open"). Edits work on a copy of the project, so
a command that panics mid-edit leaves the project untouched. The desktop app also installs a
panic hook that logs every panic through the app logger (then runs the default hook).

- `Project::to_file_json` writes `savedBy` (the EffectCraft version) ahead of the project and
checks that the text reads back before anything is written: JSON has no NaN or infinity, so
such a value made a file that saved but could never be opened. Save now fails with a message
and the file on disk is left as it was.
- Opening a project saved by a newer EffectCraft warns that settings this version doesn't know
are lost on saving; `file.open` reports `savedBy`. A file that isn't a project names itself in
the error.
- Increment and Save keeps the extension (`.ecprojx` stays XML); Save a Copy writes XML for
`.ecprojx` / `.xml` paths, like Save As.
- Docs: architecture (document model), parity.

Layer::motion_trackers_mut expect()ed the group it had just inserted; it returns an Option
now and track.motion reports an error if the group is somehow missing. Denies the panic
lints in the crate (the project model behind .ecproj files).

- Group Shapes (Ctrl+G) / Ungroup Shapes (Ctrl+Shift+G) sit in the Layer menu itself, as in
After Effects (they were under Mask and Shape Path).
- Window ▸ Learn opens the Home screen's Learn tab.
- Composition ▸ Composition Flowchart is Ctrl+Shift+F11 and Window ▸ Flowchart Ctrl+F11 (the
flowchart had the panel's shortcut and the panel none).
- Layer ▸ Transform ▸ Center In View shows Ctrl+Home.
- "Reveal in Finder" reads "Reveal in Explorer" on Windows and "Reveal in File Manager" on
Linux (`menus::platform_label`).
- Docs: parity (View ▸ New Viewer noted as not yet).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Pre-compose makes the new composition with the original's pixel aspect, background, motion
blur and frame blending settings and 3D renderer (`Comp::nested_like`); it kept only size,
rate and background.
- File ▸ New Comp from Selection records one undo step (two per item before) and takes each
item's pixel aspect. Several items selected open the New Composition from Selection dialog:
Single / Multiple Compositions, Use Dimensions From, Still Duration (default from Settings ▸
Import ▸ Still Footage), Add to Render Queue, Sequence Layers with Overlap, Duration and
Transition. `file.newCompFromSelection {single, dimensionsFrom, duration, addToRenderQueue,
sequence, overlap, overlapDuration, transition}`; `layer.addItem {duration}` for stills.
- Docs: parity.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Locked layers can't be selected (Timeline click, Select All, Ctrl+Up/Down; shy layers while
hidden too) and are left alone by Clear/Delete, Arrange, Layer ▸ Transform and Center Anchor
Point, which fail when every target is locked (`commands::unlocked`, `commands::selectable`).
- Deleting a parent unparents its children where they are, in the same undo step: the
pick-whip compensation moved out of `layer.setParent` into `layer::parent_fixes` /
`ParentFix::apply`, which now also handles separated X/Y Position.
- Bring Forward / Send Backward move each selected layer one step (a non-contiguous selection
was squeezed into one block).
- Center In View / Fit to Comp keep a 3D layer's Z (and Fit keeps Scale/Anchor Z); Reset /
Center / Fit / Center Anchor Point work with separated dimensions (`layer::update_position`).
- Duplicate and paste keep parents and track mattes, following the copies when both were
copied; paste dropped them always.
- Docs: agents, parity.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Layer ▸ Layer Settings on a solid or adjustment layer opens Solid Settings on the layer's
solid (it ran an empty command before): name (renames the layer and the solid), size, Pixel
Aspect Ratio, colour, and "Affect all layers that use this solid". It starts off, as in After
Effects, so changing a solid other layers share gives this layer its own copy.
`layer.settings {pixelAspect?, affectAll?}` → `{layer, solid?}`; `layer.newSolid {pixelAspect?}`.
- Nulls ask for their name; text and shape layers have no settings (the entry is disabled).
- Composition Settings / New Composition and Solid Settings register an automation id for
every control (`dialog.comp.*`, `dialog.solid.*`). Composition Settings takes any typed frame
rate besides the list, and New Composition starts from the last settings used.
- Colour buttons in both dialogs show the stored sRGB colour (`widgets::srgb_color_button`);
egui's linear picker showed it lighter.
- Docs: agents, parity.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Quit and the window's close button, File ▸ New Project, Open Project, Open Recent, Close
Project, the demo project and a Home template show Save / Don't Save / Cancel when the
project has unsaved changes (Save asks for a path when untitled; cancelling that keeps the
project open). File ▸ Revert asks to discard. Before, all of them dropped unsaved work
without asking.
- The window title shows the project's path and `*` while it is modified.
- The modified mark follows undo: the session keeps the snapshot it last opened or saved
(`Session::saved_project`), so undoing, jumping in the History panel or rolling back a batch
to the saved state clears it.
- An edit that changes nothing (a value set to what it already is) records no undo step and
doesn't mark the project modified (`Project::same_content`, comparing untouched comps by
pointer).
- Agents' `engine.execute` / MCP calls are never asked; `ui.menu.invoke` shows the prompt like a
click (automation ids `dialog.unsaved.save` / `dontSave` / `revert` / `cancel`), and the
control channel's `app.quit {force: true}` skips it.
- Docs: architecture, agents, control protocol, parity.

warp.status solved the stabilization plan (Subspace Warp eigen-decompositions and mesh fits)
on the page the first time it saw an analysis: ~4.9 s blocking the browser's event loop in
the smoke test. The analysis job now sends the plan summary with its result, and a settings
change has a WarpPlan job solve it (status reports stabilizing meanwhile). Desktop unchanged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
contentFill.generate sends its plan (FillPlan) to a browser job worker:
the layer's frames render in passes on the worker's WebGPU device, the PNG
sequence goes back to browser storage (Services::store_file), and the page
adds the fill layer when the plan returns (WorkerReply::Fill). The smoke
test checks it; docs updated.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- GPU in browser job workers: each job worker opens its own WebGPU device
(deferred readbacks); the Render Queue export and the analyses' frame loops
are futures (render::passes, offload::run_request_async) whose frames
render in passes, awaiting the device between them. GPU particles and
Advanced 3D read back under keys too. workers.jobs reports passes and
readbacks; the smoke test measures them.
- Layer buffers in the browser's OPFS disk cache: frame workers back their
layer caches with a PrefetchStore; the page plans what to fetch before a
request from recent misses (LayerPrefetch over the shared DiskIndex).
- Templates embed footage (default on, size-capped with a warning) and
creating from a template extracts it next to the new project / into
browser storage.
- ICC LUT profiles (lut8/lut16/lutAtoB/lutBtoA, from the public ICC spec) in
Simulate Output > My Custom RGB, baked into a 3D LUT for the viewer.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- GPU in the browser: each frame worker opens its own WebGPU device (Gpu::request_deferred) and
renders the GPU compositor and GPU effects with deferred readbacks (effectcraft-gpu deferred):
readbacks keyed by content start with map_async and miss, the pass returns placeholders, the
layer cache's gate drops inserts, and FrameServer::resume renders again once the device
delivered. Backend Auto times whole frames per comp in the workers. Frames with effects go to
GPU workers instead of the page. CPU fallback without WebGPU in workers (?nogpuworkers).
- Fix: a WGSL constant (3.40282347e38) that Chrome rejects invalidated every GPU kernel in Chrome
(the page's compositor too); a test checks every float literal fits f32.
- Disk cache in the Origin Private File System: workers write sealed frame entries with sync
access handles (temp file + move), the page keeps the DiskIndex (LRU under the settings' limit,
at most half the quota) and reads hits instead of rendering; survives reloads; blue cache bar.
- Storage manager: Settings ▸ Disk ▸ Browser Storage (usage/quota, persistent storage, Clear
buttons, automation ids) and storage.info / storage.persist / storage.clear (StorageHost).
- Docs: web.md (GPU workers, deferred passes, disk cache, storage manager, threading design:
one engine instance per worker), architecture, preferences, parity (WEB-1), roadmap.
- Tests: deferred passes vs CPU on a real device, placeholder gating, frame server passes and
Auto, GPU worker routing + disk cache across a reload, storage commands and widgets, store
usage by kind; smoke test: GPU effect frames in workers with pixel parity, disk hits after a
reload, storage manager.

comp.new / comp.settings passed `frameRate` straight to
FrameRate::from_f64, so 0 (or anything below 0.0005) became a 0/1 rate
and the next frame-duration computation divided by zero, killing the
process (and an MCP session with its unsaved project); a negative rate
was accepted as-is. Scripts hit it via addComp(..., 0) or
comp.frameRate = 0. Return a parameter error like renderQueue.add's
frameRate check does.

Fill's ADBE Fill-0002 is Color (documented numbering); essential.* controls by name with
a listing error; an explicit comp param satisfies a command's active-comp enablement.

- footage.check: background footage check after File > Open (Progress panel), not an undo step
- timeline: track-matte / parent menus built only while open (was O(n^2) per frame);
expression-row lookup per layer; panels hold Arc<Comp> snapshots instead of deep clones
- Project panel: virtualised vertical scrolling, selection reveal, thumbnails rendered off
the UI thread
- effectcraft-cli bench --ops (engine::perf + ui-egui::bench)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- command.describe / list_commands {schemas} give each command's params JSON Schema;
MCP describe_command, add_effect, list_effects and get_state (app.capabilities)
- effectcraft-cli exec --list [--schemas]
- headless UI audit: every panel kind's interactive egui widgets are covered by
automation ids (fixed: timeline navigator, label swatch, bar trim edges, group and
property name cells)
- command lookup is indexed

Adding a property already in the Essential Graphics panel adds a mirror
(EgKind::Mirror: own name and place, one value in the comp and in every
instance; editing, reverting or pushing either acts on both). A property
control can also drive further properties of the comp (links follow the
main property both ways and take instance values). essential.addMirror,
essential.linkProperty, essential.unlinkProperty; panel badges and menu;
ExtendScript addToMotionGraphicsTemplate(As), canAddToMotionGraphicsTemplate,
motionGraphicsTemplateName, controller count/name and
exportAsMotionGraphicsTemplate.

Effect Controls: Lumetri RGB and hue/saturation curve graphs, Colorama's
palette wheel, Glow's colour map strip and Arbitrary Map curves, Reshape
correspondence buttons and viewer handles (all prop.set, one undo step per
gesture, automation ids). Preview panel scrolls; Composition/Timeline tabs
get close, label swatch and viewer lock; Effect Controls tab the layer
swatch; dropdowns elide long text. Fix the browser start (no default disk
cache folder on wasm32). Browser smoke test covers frame workers, waiting
renders and the Media Browser.

Viewer frames render in long-lived Web Workers holding a project replica
(engine::remote: structural JSON diff/patch, Mirror, FrameServer); the
frame cache hands jobs to a RemoteFrames renderer (UI-thread fallback).
Roto Brush propagation runs in a job worker and streams segmentations
back (FrameSeg binary form), relayed to frame workers. Control-channel
wait:true commands whose job is offloaded reply when it ends. The Media
Browser browses a pluggable Browser: the file system on the desktop;
browser storage and File System Access folders on the web.

Preview panel: five shortcuts (Spacebar, Shift+Spacebar, Numpad 0, Shift+Numpad 0,
Alt+Numpad 0) each with saved options (include video/audio/overlays/layer controls, loop,
cache before playback, range incl. play around current time, play from, frame rate, skip,
resolution, full screen, play cached frames, move time to preview time), persisted in
prefs; playback.settings.get/set; the playback loop follows the preview plan.
Align panel: layer.align {edge, to} and layer.distribute {mode} engine commands (bounds
through transform and parents, one undo step); Align Layers to dropdown and Distribute row.

Render Settings: field render with 3:2 pulldown phases, effects/solo/guide
layer/color depth/frame blending/motion blur overrides, custom time sampling
(duration), storage overflow through a quota hook. Output Module: crop
(edges or region of interest), resize (presets, lock aspect, quality),
straight/premultiplied/alpha-only channels, post-render actions, include
project link, audio channels and PCM formats, WebM bitrate and key frame
interval. Render Settings / Output Module templates with built-ins and
defaults per slot (Edit > Templates dialogs), render logs next to the
output, Notify on completion. All through renderQueue.* commands and
persisted in the project.

Layer > Camera > Create Stereo 3D Rig (left/right eye comps with expression-linked eye
cameras, Stereo 3D Controls effect, stereo comp through 3D Glasses), Create Orbit Null,
Create Cameras from 3D Model; Layer > Light > Create Lights from 3D Model
(KHR_lights_punctual), Control Light with Camera, Create Environment Light Background
Layer (equirectangular sky drawn through the camera). glTF cameras and punctual lights
are parsed by effectcraft-model.
Advanced 3D: per-sample motion blur over the comp shutter, and blend modes / track
mattes / Preserve Transparency composited through the 2D path in depth order.

Text: text.animatorFontAxes (replaces the stub) lists the layer font's
variation axes (skrifa) or adds an animator property that offsets one axis
(weighted by the selectors, from the axis default); the renderer redraws each
character's outline at its design-space position (cached per location). The
Timeline's Animate: menu lists the font's axes.

LYR-9: Layer > Layer Styles > Layer Style Options... (layer.style.options)
and choosing a style from that menu open a Layer Style dialog: style list
with check boxes (Blending Options first) and the selected style's controls
built from its layerStyles properties, edited live through prop.set (one
undo step per control); Cancel rolls back everything done since it opened.

The 3D Camera Tracker analysis joins the offloaded jobs. The disk cache stays off in the
browser (std::env::temp_dir panics on wasm32 once a config store exists).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Text: vertical type turns Roman characters on their side (CJK stays
upright) unless Standard Vertical Roman Alignment is on; Tate-Chu-Yoko sets
selected characters horizontally in a one-em cell of the column (layer.setText
tateChuYoko / verticalRomanUpright, Character panel toggles). A Left-to-Right
paragraph is now forced LTR instead of auto-detected. The editing caret follows
animators and text on a path (render::text::caret_maps). Lottie export writes
per-character style runs as index-unit range animators.

Interface: Timeline outline columns wider than the pane scroll horizontally
(Shift+wheel/trackpad, scroll bar above the footer; headers clipped); the
Project panel's optional columns scroll under the frozen Name/Label columns.
ANM-1: keyframe colour labels (keys.setLabel, Label submenu, tinted key
icons) and Edit > Select Keyframe Label Group on selected/all layers and
visible keyframes (keys.selectLabelGroup replaces the stub). Alt-drag time
scaling of key groups already existed.

- Persistence: settings, shortcuts, recent projects, imported media, saved projects and
auto-saves live in OPFS (IndexedDB fallback) through an in-memory mirror flushed in the
background (apps/effectcraft-web/src/store.rs, persist.rs); ConfigStore gains FileOps so
auto-save / recovery work in the browser store; the session snapshot restores the last
project + editor state on reload; File > Open Recent works from storage.
- Audio: Web Audio output (AudioWorklet, ScriptProcessor fallback) fed by AudioPlayback::pump
on wasm32; A/V sync from AudioContext.currentTime; meters; unlock on first gesture.
- Background jobs: engine::offload (WorkerRequest/WorkerReply protocol, Offload trait,
run_request); Render Queue, tracker, mask tracker, Warp Stabilizer and Roto Freeze run in Web
Workers (a second engine instance on the shared compiled module), progress streamed back;
cancel terminates the worker.
- GPU: WebGPU viewer frames drawn straight from the compositor's texture (gpu_display on
wasm32 when the viewer draws plainly); async readback (Gpu::read_display_async) for pixels.
- PWA: manifest, service worker precaching the build (xtask fills list/version), icons copied
from assets/app-icon; COOP/COEP kept from cached responses; offline reload works.
- window.effectcraft: saveToBrowser, listStored, removeStored, flush; info() reports storage,
audio, gpu, workers.
- Tests: native store + protocol + offload (render, track, cancel) tests; smoke.mjs extended
(GPU path, worker render responsiveness, audio gesture + playback, reload persistence,
Open Recent, offline reload).

3D-1: Classic 3D depth of field renders the camera's Iris Shape (Fast
Rectangle box or Triangle…Decagon polygon), Iris Rotation, Roundness, Aspect
Ratio and Diffraction Fringe as a span-kernel gather blur, with Highlight
Gain/Threshold/Saturation boosting highlights first; tilted layers blur
progressively by per-pixel camera depth. Layer > Camera > Link Focus Distance
to Point of Interest / to Layer (expressions) and Set Focus Distance to Layer
replace the stubs.

Window > Essential Graphics: Primary comp, Solo Supported Properties (timeline filter),
template name, typed controls editing the source properties, drag a property name from the
timeline onto the list, rename/reorder/remove, Add Formatting (group, comment), Media
Replacement, Export Template, and the selected instance's Essential Properties with Revert /
Push. The comp viewer shows an expression error bar (click to reveal); the expression editor's
f button opens the categorised Expression Language menu. Project panel proxy switch; Interpret
Footage dialog gains Guess, matte colour, Invert Alpha, Separate Fields, Linear Light, Proxy.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Shapes (SHP-2): Stroke Taper (pixels/percent start/end length, width, ease) and
Wave (amount, pixels/cycles, wavelength, phase) rendered as a variable-width
outline; Dash 2/Gap 2/Dash 3/Gap 3 (shape.dashes.add/remove, timeline +/-
buttons); radial gradient Highlight Length/Angle as a focal gradient.
Masks (MSK-1): mask feather points on the Mask Path (mask.featherPoint.*,
Mask Feather tool add/drag), per-point signed radius and tension, rendered
from the signed distance to the path; carried through vertex edits.
Motion blur (LYR-10): Adaptive Sample Limit comp setting; 2D layers take one
sample per pixel of shutter travel between Samples Per Frame and the limit.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Items (footage and comps) carry a proxy rendered in their place at the source's size when
its switch and Render Settings > Proxy Use allow it; Create Proxy queues a half-resolution
render whose post-render action attaches it. Interpret Footage gains Separate Fields
(upper/lower first, fields become frames at twice the rate), Guess alpha with matte colour,
explicit matte colour, Invert Alpha, Interpret As Linear Light; non-square footage, solids
and precomps are stretched by their pixel aspect in the comp. The four proxy stubs are gone.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
sampleImage renders the sampled layer through the evaluating renderer's footage source
(EvalCtx::footage), cached per thread and frame. File > Import reads .json/.csv/.tsv as data
footage kept in the project. expr.errors collects failing expressions for the error bar;
expr.languageMenu lists the categorised Expression Language menu. Marker keys expose
protectedRegion and cue points; colorDepth, timeToFeetAndFrames, comp.activeCamera.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Comps expose controls (properties typed as text/color/slider/checkbox/point/angle/dropdown,
Media Replacement, groups, comments); precomp layers get an Essential Properties group whose
edits override per instance (Push to Comp / Revert); templates export/import as an open ZIP
(manifest.json + project subset + media + poster). Stretched precomps keep protected regions
at their original speed.

Adds Review, Learn, Essential Graphics, Color and Undocked Panels to the
built-in workspaces (Libraries, an Adobe service, is left out), lists them all
in Window > Workspace in After Effects' order, and gives each its own layout:
Review (large viewer, Markers and Project), Learn (Default plus the Home
screen with the community links), Essential Graphics (Properties panel full
height, type panels), Color (wide Effect Controls, Info), Undocked Panels
(Composition docked, the other panels floating). Tests check every AE
workspace exists, has its own layout, has each panel once and is in the menu.

Native menu bar (apps/effectcraft, muda, macOS only): the engine's After Effects
menu tree mirrored into NSMenu through a pure, serializable spec
(ui-egui native_menu: submenus, separators, live labels, check marks, enabled
state, Cmd/Ctrl/function-key shortcuts as accelerators, Open Recent). Hide /
Hide Others / Show All are macOS' predefined items (app.hideOthers/app.showAll
are real commands now, via NSApplication); Services added; About, Settings and
Quit dispatch our commands. State is pushed only when the session revision,
selection, history, settings or journal change; structural changes rebuild.
Activations dispatch the same command ids as the in-window bar; Edit
Cut/Copy/Paste/Select All/Undo/Redo act on a focused text field. Settings >
Appearance > Use In-Window Menu Bar on macOS switches back.
Timeline: column visibility from the column header's context menu (A/V
Features, Keys, Label, #, Comment, Switches, Modes, Parent & Link, In, Out,
Duration, Stretch; Source/Layer Name toggle), Comment editing
(layer.setComment), draggable In/Out/Duration cells, Stretch opens Time
Stretch; property search filters layers and reveals matching properties with
their groups; Shift+P/S/R/T/A/E/M/F/L/U add to the revealed properties; UU
reveals all modified properties; Shift-drag in the ruler snaps the CTI to keys,
in/out points, markers and the work area. Commands: timeline.column,
timeline.sourceName, timeline.search, timeline.revealAdd.*.

Advanced 3D comps render their 3D runs as one scene of world-space triangles: model and
primitive layers (meshes, skinning, animation clips by layer time), extruded text/shape
layers, and textured cards for every other layer with their Material Options. Shading is
physically based in linear light: Cook-Torrance GGX + Lambert for parallel/spot/point lights
(AE falloff and cone), ambient lights, image-based light from an Environment light's layer
(equirectangular; cosine irradiance map + roughness mip chain + split-sum BRDF fit), and
PCF shadow maps (spot/parallel/point cube faces). 2x2 SSAA, depth of field as a gather blur
by circle of confusion, back to the working encoding.
The software rasteriser (depth buffer, top-left rule, perspective-correct, opaque visibility
then sorted transparent blending) is the reference and CI path; effectcraft-gpu implements
Accelerator::raster_3d with a wgpu render pipeline (advanced3d.wgsl) and matches it within
tolerance. Environment layers are hidden from both renderers.

Liquify stores its strokes as effect data and replays them into a cached
displacement mesh; liquify.stroke / liquify.clear commands for agents.
Rolling Shutter Repair measures motion with effectcraft-track KLT (new
effects -> track same-layer edge).

New crate effectcraft-model (L2): glTF 2.0 (.gltf/.glb, data URIs, external buffers and
images, PBR metallic-roughness with base/MR/normal/occlusion/emissive textures, node
hierarchy, skins, step/linear/cubic animations) and OBJ/MTL import, parametric primitives,
extruded/bevelled outline meshes and polygon triangulation with holes.
Project: FootageKind::Model, LayerSource::Model/Primitive, Layer::environment, Geometry and
Material Options builders, Environment light Source. Media probes and loads models
(FootageSource::model). Engine: layer.newModel, layer.new3dPrimitive/newPrimitive,
comp.renderer, layer.environment, material.set/reset/duplicateAssign/revealSource (stubs
replaced); File > Import and layer.addItem pick up models. Hand-written fixtures with
attribution sidecars.

Auto backend keeps comps with 3D layers on the CPU compositor (3D runs are
still CPU-composited; the GPU round-trip made them slower).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Region-of-interest frames render on the CPU path; the viewer keeps main's
frame drawing (Show Channel, exposure, ROI) and reads GPU-composited frames
back. Keeping frames as native egui-wgpu textures stays implemented behind
RenderSource::gpu_display (off).

New L3 crate effectcraft-gpu: a wgpu compute backend for the per-frame
compositing walk (layer transforms with the CPU's nearest/bilinear/bicubic
sampling and minification pre-filter, motion-blur accumulation, track
mattes, Preserve Transparency, layer style passes and knockout, all 38
blend modes as a WGSL port of color::blend, 8/16 bpc clamp+quantise,
colour-space conversions). 3D runs, adjustment and wireframe layers run on
the CPU between GPU steps. GPU effects with the CPU semantics: Gaussian,
Fast Box and Directional Blur, Glow, Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, Tint,
Fill, Gradient Ramp, Fractal Noise, Drop Shadow, Brightness & Contrast,
Exposure, Invert, Transform (registry gpu badge from effects::GPU_EFFECTS).
render: Backend (Cpu/Gpu/Auto) in RenderOpts, the Accelerator trait and
Renderer::accel, GPU effect chains in the effect stack, hooks for the GPU
walk. Project setting gpu_acceleration (Mercury GPU Acceleration / Software
Only), render.backend command, file.projectSettings renderer. Session and
Render Queue exports carry the accelerator. CLI --gpu and bench --gpu.
Tests compare GPU vs CPU renders (blend modes x bit depths, transforms,
masks, mattes, motion blur, colour management, styles, collapse,
adjustment fallback, every GPU effect) and skip without an adapter.

- project.select/rename/move/setLabel/setComment engine commands (undoable; no folder into
itself).
- Drag items onto folders / the root, Enter or double-click the name to rename, double-click
the Comment cell to edit, label colour popup on the label column, Media Duration / File
Path / Comment columns shown or hidden from the header context menu, rendered comp/footage
thumbnails in the info header.

Type tool point/box text creation, double-click editing, caret and selection
in the viewer (viewer_text.rs), keyboard/IME/clipboard, box handles; engine
text.edit/endEdit/setSelection/moveCaret/insert/delete, layer.setText range,
caret insertion style, Paste Text and Match Formatting / Paste Text
Formatting Only (stubs removed); Character/Paragraph/Properties panels act
on the selection.

Composition viewer interaction parity with After Effects:
- Snapping (View > Snapping, the Tools bar checkbox, Cmd/Ctrl inverts while
dragging): layer edges, centres and anchor points, mask and shape-path
vertices, comp edges/centre, guides (Snap to Guides) and grid (Snap to
Grid), with highlighted target box / line / cross feedback. Pure maths in
engine::viewer (nearest target within tolerance, priority ties).
- Rulers (Cmd+R) with live pointer markers and a draggable zero point;
guides dragged out of the rulers, moved in the viewer, dragged off to
remove (view.moveGuide / view.removeGuide), lock respected; proportional
grid.
- Show Channel (RGB/Red/Green/Blue/Alpha/RGB Straight, Colorize), exposure
(+/- stops in linear light, reset), Take Snapshot (Shift+F5) with a stored
render and Show Snapshot (F5 held / button held), Fast Previews (Off,
Adaptive Resolution, Draft, Fast Draft, Wireframe), Resolution > Custom.
- Region of interest: drawn in the viewer; RenderOpts.roi renders only that
rectangle (crop of the full render, tested), Crop Comp to ROI uses it.
- Bottom bar in AE 2026 order ("136.1 %", "(Full)").
- Shape Pen (SHP-1): Pen on a shape layer / nothing selected draws Shape n
groups (Path 1, Stroke 1, Fill 1) via shape.newPath; the G slot cycles
Add / Delete / Convert Vertex and Mask Feather; mask.* vertex commands
work on shape paths; mask.insertVertex / mask.convertVertex; marquee
vertex selection, Alt-drag/click converts, double-click free transform
box (path.freeTransform on masks and shape paths).
- Motion paths (ANM-3): keyframe dots and spatial tangent handles, dragging
keys (keys.set) and tangents (keys.setSpatialTangents), parented layers.

Collapsed precomps draw their layers straight into the parent with
concatenated transforms and multiplied opacity (nested blend modes and
adjustment layers act on the parent); a non-Normal mode, track matte or
Preserve Transparency composites the collapsed result as a whole; masks,
effects or styles force a flattened render. Nested 3D layers use the
parent's camera and lights and join the parent's 3D run when the precomp
layer is 3D. Continuously Rasterize re-rasterises text and shape layers at
their on-screen scale. Draft quality samples nearest-neighbour, Wireframe
draws the layer bounds. layer.slip / slipBack (Alt+PageUp) / slipForward
(Alt+PageDown) and dragging the timeline source bar slip the source under
fixed in/out points, clamped to the source duration; undoable.

Frame Mix and Pixel Motion for footage and precomp layers when the layer's
Frame Blending switch and the comp's Enable Frame Blending are on and the
source time falls between source frames (rate conform, time stretch, time
remap). Exact frame positions from tick arithmetic. Pixel Motion is a
hierarchical block-matching optical flow (SAD search, sub-pixel parabola
fit, vector median) with a bidirectional warp-blend (raster::flow). Blended
footage frames are cached.

8/16 bpc projects clamp and quantise layer pixels after source/masks and
every effect, and the comp after every layer (16 bpc = 0..32768); 32 bpc
keeps over-range values. Blend modes without HDR support clamp their inputs
in 32 bpc. Working space (sRGB, Rec. 709, Rec. 2020, Display P3; matrices
derived from the published primaries), footage colour profiles from stream
metadata or Interpret Footage, Linearize Working Space and Blend Colors Using
1.0 Gamma. Layer cache keys include the colour settings. Project panel depth
button: click cycles, Alt-click opens Project Settings.

PRJ-7. `engine::autosave` with the session hooks the frontends call:
- Auto-save: every N minutes a dirty project is written to "EffectCraft Auto-Save" next to
it (or a custom folder; untitled projects use the custom folder or the config dir) as
"<name> auto-save N.ecproj", rotating through max versions (oldest overwritten, extra
slots dropped when the maximum shrinks). Optional save when the render queue starts.
- Atomic writes for projects, auto-saves and config files: temp file + fsync + rename; a
failed write removes the temp file and leaves the previous file intact.
- Crash recovery: a session.lock sentinel in the config dir records the open project and
its latest auto-save; a clean exit removes it. At launch a leftover sentinel offers the
latest auto-save in a Recover Project dialog (Settings > Startup can turn it off).
- File > Open Recent (stored in the settings) with Clear Recent Projects; Increment and
Save uses After Effects naming ("Intro 2.ecproj"); Revert reloads the saved file.
- Commands: file.autoSave, file.recoveryInfo, file.openRecent {index|path},
file.clearRecent.
- Tests: rotation, interval/dirty tick, simulated crash mid-write, unclean-exit detection
and recovery, Open Recent / Increment and Save / Revert.

Keyboard shortcut presets in the engine (`engine::shortcuts`): every menu entry (including
ones with bound parameters), registry command and frontend command is bindable, scoped
application-wide or to a panel. "EffectCraft Default" is After Effects' layout and
read-only; editing it creates a custom preset that stores only its differences. Presets
are saved in the config store; the shortcut dispatcher and the menus read the active one.
- Commands: shortcuts.list, shortcuts.set {command, params?, keys}, shortcuts.reset,
shortcuts.preset {select|new|duplicate|delete|rename}, shortcuts.export/import (JSON),
shortcuts.conflicts.
- Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts: preset bar, modifier toggles (or held keys), an on-screen
keyboard coloured by scope (application-wide / panel-specific / both), key details,
a searchable list of every command, record-or-type assignment with conflict warnings,
reset to default; all widgets have automation ids.
- Tests: normalization, defaults conflict-free, conflict detection, custom preset creation
and persistence, preset lifecycle + export/import, dispatch uses the custom preset.

A real Settings model in the engine (`engine::prefs`): serde, versioned, dotted keys
(`general.undoLevels`, `labels.3.name`), migration of older layouts, unknown keys kept,
persisted through a `ConfigStore` trait (platform config dir on the desktop; MemoryConfig
for tests; the web app can back it with localStorage).
- After Effects 2026 pages (General … Scripting & Expressions) as a schema shared by the
dialog, `prefs.pages` and docs/preferences.md (rows not wired yet are listed there and
kept in step by a test).
- Commands: prefs.get, prefs.set {key, value | values}, prefs.reset {page?}, prefs.open
{page?}, prefs.pages.
- Wired settings: undo levels, path point size, tool tips, layers at comp start / CTI,
default spatial interpolation linear, Home screen on launch, new project template,
rendering progress in Info, adaptive resolution limit, cache when idle, fast previews,
theme + UI brightness, label names/colours everywhere (Label menu, timeline, project,
render queue, viewer), label colour for handles, grid colour/spacing/subdivisions, guide
colour, safe margins, still footage duration, sequence fps, audio output device and
output mapping, layer / footage / preview cache budgets, default 3D renderer.
- Settings dialog: AE's left page list + right content, OK / Cancel (restores) / Previous /
Next, every widget with an automation id.

Paint: non-destructive Paint effect with Brush/Clone/Eraser stroke groups
(Path, Stroke Options, Transform, Duration spans, Write On End keys),
dab rasterizer (diameter/angle/roundness/hardness/spacing/flow/opacity,
pressure dynamics, modes, channels), eraser modes, clone from layer/time,
cache keys include visible strokes. paint.stroke/options/brushPreset/
setCloneSource/removeStroke/presets. Layer panel with paint tools, Paint
and Brushes panels.
Puppet: Puppet effect with meshes and Position/Advanced/Bend/Starch/Overlap
pins; alpha contour -> expansion (exact EDT) -> simplified outline ->
Delaunay with constraint recovery; ARAP (Igarashi 2005) two-step solve with
CG; anti-aliased texture-mapped rendering with overlap depth. puppet.addPin/
movePin/setPin/removePin/mesh/info. Puppet tools in the viewer with mesh
overlay and header options.

Angle dial with revolutions (0x+45.0°), point crosshair + on-viewer effect
point controls via a small viewer hook, colour eyedropper sampling the
composited frame, Curves graph editor and Levels histogram/triangles bound
to their params, layer params with a Source/Masks/Effects & Masks companion,
mask (Path) popups, keyframe navigator, drag-to-reorder effect headers.
Engine: effect.copy / effect.paste / effect.reset; effect.remove takes the
selection; Edit > Copy/Paste/Duplicate/Clear act on selected effects; all
undoable.

New crate effectcraft-lottie (L3): export a comp to Lottie JSON / dotLottie
(precomp and base64 image assets; shape, solid, null, precomp, image and text
layers or glyph shapes; transforms with parenting, separated position,
anchor; keyframes with speed/influence converted to normalised i/o tangents,
hold keys, spatial ti/to; all shape items incl. gradients, dashes, trim,
repeater and path operators; masks, track mattes, blend modes, time remap,
timing, markers, optional expressions, a few Lottie effects) with a warnings
list for what Lottie cannot express, and the inverse import. Commands
file.exportLottie / file.importLottie with File > Export / Import entries.
Round-trip tests (values and rendered frames) and hand-written fixtures.

New L2 crate effectcraft-track: per-point feature/search region tracking with
pyramid normalized cross-correlation and Lucas-Kanade (similarity + gain/bias)
sub-pixel refinement, confidence, adapt/stop/extrapolate/continue actions,
RGB/luminance/saturation channels, blur/enhance pre-processing, and
homography/affine/similarity solves.
Project: Motion Trackers > Tracker n > Track Point n property tree
(GroupKind::Tracker with type, target and options). Engine: track.* commands
(new/motion/stabilize/property/select/setType/setTarget/options/setPoint/
analyze/stop/apply/reset/delete/status), background or blocking analysis
job with progress and cancel (one undo step), apply to Transform, Stabilize
and Corner Pin. Renderer::layer_source for the tracker's frames.

Animation ▸ Animate Text (Enable Per-character 3D, every animator property,
Fill/Stroke Color RGB/Hue/Saturation/Brightness/Opacity submenus, Line Anchor,
Character Value), Add Text Selector ▸ Range/Wiggly/Expression (text.addSelector
now supports all kinds) and Text Animation Presets after Browse Presets, in the
engine menu tree. Stubs replaced: text.perCharacter3d, animatorLineAnchor,
animatorCharacterValue, addWigglySelector, addExpressionSelector.

Also: render uses web_time::Instant in layer styles; renderQueue.add documents
its render-settings/output-module keys so checked execution accepts them (+test).

- apps/effectcraft-web (L6): eframe web runner booting the shared EffectcraftApp with a browser
session: in-memory file table, <input type=file> pickers and drag-and-drop for open/import,
downloads for Save and Render Queue outputs (several files as one stored .zip), and the
window.effectcraft promise API over the control channel. Demo project on start.
- wasm32 runtime fixes: web-time for Instant/SystemTime (render, engine, export, ui-egui);
Frames renders queued jobs on the UI thread (Frames::pump) instead of a thread pool;
Render Queue runs inline; relative outputs resolve under / ; control PNGs inline.
- effectcraft-export: per-job output Sink (files to memory instead of disk); host FileExporter
carries it; test that sink exports touch no file.
- xtask web [--dev] [--serve PORT] (wasm-bindgen 0.2.129, optional wasm-opt, COOP/COEP server);
effectcraft-web in WEB_CRATES. docs/web.md, headless Chrome smoke test, favicon (+attribution).

Timeline: Text group 'Animate:' and animator 'Add:' pop-ups (properties and
Range/Wiggly/Expression selectors), selectors/properties listed directly under
each animator, Path Options ▸ Path lists the layer's masks and hides the
other path options until one is chosen. Properties panel Add Animator lists
every animator property plus Enable Per-character 3D, and a Presets menu.
Animation menu: Animate Text, Add Text Selector, Text Animation Presets.
Expression Selector result replaces the selection (no Mode); selector popups
are non-keyframable like AE.

- Integrate main (render queue, timeline/keys, time remap, masks/pen, 3D, MCP/CLI).
- Menu tree now runs renderQueue.add, layer.enableTimeRemap, layer.timeReverse,
layer.freezeFrame/OnLastFrame, prop.separateDimensions, mask.setClosed,
layer.cameraSettings, view.3d.* / view.3d.last / view.reset3DView, main's
layer.autoOrient and keyframe velocity/interpolation/time-stretch dialogs;
matching stubs deleted (view.3d.default stays disabled).
- Keyframe clipboard is main's (keys.copy/paste); Paste Reversed Keyframes
reuses it. Animation-menu commands moved to commands/animation.rs.
- Main's spec menu paths/labels aligned with AE (Camera Settings under
Layer > Camera, "..." labels, Freeze On Last Frame).

Range selector complete (units, based on, modes, shapes, smoothness, ease
high/low, randomize), Wiggly and Expression selectors combined by mode;
all AE animator properties incl. line anchor, character offset/value,
skew axis, tracking type, fill/stroke HSB+opacity, blur; More Options
(anchor grouping, fill & stroke order, inter-character blending); Path
Options (text on a mask path); per-character 3D rendered as planes in
the 3D compositor; text animation commands and original presets.

Layer Styles (Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer/Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Satin,
Color/Gradient Overlay, Stroke) and Blending Options (Global Light, Fill Opacity, R/G/B,
Knockout, Blend Interior Styles as Group) as a layerStyles property group with AE names,
order and defaults. Rendered in layer space after effects (exterior passes composite with
their own blend modes below the body), cached per pass, scaled with render resolution.
Commands layer.style.* (menu Layer > Layer Styles), Global Light shared per comp, timeline
eye switches.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Resolve conflicts with perf (layer cache / Arc<Buf>), export (RenderOpts.view: None
for output), timeline (separate dimensions + one-node POI visibility), mask/pen
viewer gestures (alongside camera tools and view-aware layer matrices), key
dialogs (alongside Camera/Light Settings), render queue + MCP command modules.
3D path tangent honours separated position; DOF blurs a per-frame copy so cached
layer buffers stay shared. New test: cached renders match uncached after camera,
focus, light and 3D view changes. Fix a clone-on-copy lint from main.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- layer.autoOrient {mode: off|alongPath|towardsCamera|towardsPointOfInterest}
(Layer > Transform > Auto-Orient…, Cmd+Alt+O); render support for Orient
Along Path (2D and 3D) and Orient Towards Camera (with recursion guard).
- Layers parented to cameras/lights follow their full rotation.
- Draft 3D turns off lights and shadows (and DOF).
- Turning the 3D switch off discards Z values, Orientation and X/Y Rotation.
- Tests for all of the above.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Comp durations (comp.new / comp.settings) are whole frames.
- layer.addItem start/out, layer.timing in/out/start/delta and time-stretch in/out snap to
the nearest comp frame; prop.addKey / prop.set with an explicit time key the nearest frame.
- The demo project builds every time on 29.97 fps frames (Lower Third in = frame 150 =
0:00:05:00, comp = 300 frames).
- Test: demo + commands stay frame-aligned.

Engine (mask.rs, tests in tests_timeline.rs incl. render + undo/redo):
mask.new, mask.addVertex, mask.setVertex, mask.setClosed (Layer > Mask and Shape Path >
Closed), mask.selectVertices, mask.moveVertices (merged drags), mask.deleteVertices
(Delete with vertices selected), mask.remove / mask.removeAll (Layer > Mask). Edits of an
animated Mask Path key the current time.
Viewer: Pen tool on the selected layer - click = corner vertex, drag = Bezier vertex,
click the first vertex to close, Esc/Enter or another tool ends the path; rubber band to
the pointer. Selection tool: click/shift-click mask vertices, drag selected vertices,
drag tangent handles (symmetric; Alt breaks). Vertices register automation ids
viewer.mask.<uid>.vertex.<i>. Mode/inverted/feather/opacity/expansion stay in the
timeline mask rows.

- Properties with an expression get an editor row in the timeline: Expression label,
enable (=) switch, pick whip, syntax-error warning, and a multiline code editor in the
time-graph area (commits on blur or Cmd/Ctrl+Enter via prop.setExpression).
- Expression pick whip: drag onto another property row -> prop.pickWhip (AE reference
expression). Parent pick whip in Parent & Link: drag onto a layer -> layer.setParent.
- Alt-click on a stopwatch starts with the property's own reference (transform.opacity).
- Timeline rows have variable heights; the empty-graph box-select area sits under the rows.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
engine comp.settings/comp.new: anchor (shifts unparented layers and their
position keys on resize), startTime/startTimecode, renderer.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Current time shown as AE does: 0:00:02:15 (hours unpadded; time::format_timecode_ae),
frame count zero-padded to 5 digits (00075 (29.97 fps)).
- Time ruler labels in seconds:frames (00:15f, 01:00f) with frame-based adaptive spacing.
- time.set snaps seconds to the nearest frame (2.5 s at 29.97 -> frame 75).
- Mode / Track Matte columns hidden until Toggle Switches/Modes (F4), as in AE's default.
- Timeline outline pane sized to its columns and clipped so Parent & Link never draws
over the time graph in narrow timelines.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Engine (all commands with undo/redo + tests in engine/src/tests_timeline.rs):
- keys.copy/paste (Edit Copy/Cut/Paste route to keys when keys are selected;
relative timing kept, paste at CTI, cross-property paste of same type),
keys.selectAll (Cmd+Alt+A), keys.nudge* (Alt+Arrow, Alt+Shift+Arrow),
keys.set / keys.setEase (graph editor drags), keys.info (dialog data),
keys.timeReverse; keys.interpolation gains continuous/auto Bezier, spatial
interpolation and roving; keys.velocity takes per-dimension values and
Continuous.
- Roving keys (keyframe::retime_roving): constant speed along the motion path.
- Layer > Time: layer.timeStretch (percent|duration, hold in/current/out),
layer.timeReverse (Cmd+Alt+R), layer.enableTimeRemap (Cmd+Alt+T),
layer.freezeFrame, layer.freezeOnLastFrame; render uses Time Remap as the
source time for precomp/footage layers.
- prop.separateDimensions (X/Y/Z Position; prop.set on Position writes them).
- layer.setParent compensates so the layer stays in place (compensate:false
to opt out).
- prop.pickWhip writes AE-style reference expressions (thisComp.layer(..),
effect(..)(..), mask(..).maskFeather, temp=…;[temp,temp], …[0]).
- prop.setExpression: syntax errors keep the text but disable the expression.
- expr: arrays of properties returned by an expression are resolved.
UI: Keyframe Velocity, Keyframe Interpolation and Time Stretch dialogs;
Graph Editor (value + speed graphs, draggable keys and Bezier/influence
handles, auto-zoom, fit, show selected, separate dimensions, hold/linear/
auto Bezier/Easy Ease buttons); key + layer context menus. Clears the
workspace clippy -D warnings failures.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- render: LayerCache (content-keyed processed-layer cache: source -> masks ->
effects, keyed by a hash of the layer's non-transform props evaluated at the
frame time, solid item, switches, scale; time folded in for clock-driven
effects / wiggle paths). Static and transform-only layers render once;
edits only re-render the edited layer. Session + UI frame jobs share it.
- effects: TIME_DEPENDENT list + test that every clock-reading effect is listed.
- raster: affine composite fast path (per-row span clipping, unchecked interior
bilinear, integer-translation copies, inlined Normal blend), checked against
composite_warp_reference; box/Gaussian blur without transposes, two
ping-pong buffers; accumulate_warp so motion blur sums into one buffer
instead of one full-frame image per sub-sample.
- ui: viewer frame is urgent and jumps the prefetch queue; stale-revision jobs
are dropped; paused prefetch waits for the viewer frame; "Frame Render Time"
reports viewer frames only; parallel f32 -> Color32 conversion.
- cli: `frame --bench N` (per-layer/per-effect timings, wall + CPU time) and
`frame --bench-play N` (consecutive frames with/without the layer cache).
- tests: cache transparency (scrub, edits of values/keys/effects/masks/
solids/text/timing), hit/miss accounting, time-dependent effects, demo
cached == uncached, fast warp/blur/accumulate == reference.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Properties panel (panels/properties.rs): Layer Transform with keyframe navigator
or stopwatch, AE value formatting (integers, %, Nx+N° rotation), linked Scale,
Reset; Text (font/style/size/leading/tracking/stroke, fill/stroke toggles);
Paragraph (7 alignments); Text Animation > Add Animator; scrolling.
- Tabs name what they show: Composition <comp>, <comp> timeline, Effect
Controls <layer>, Properties: <layer>.
- Default workspace: full-height right column, Preview over Properties.
- engine: time.go nextKey/prevKey accept prop uid; layer.setText supports all
seven justify modes, applyFill/applyStroke and Auto leading (fixes the
Paragraph 'justify' button mapping to Justify All).
- examples/snapshot: render the real UI headless (egui_kittest + wgpu) with
scripted control-channel steps.
